Getting Help for Youth in Crisis--English Language Learning Curriculum

A six-hour curriculum geared towards adult ELL students of Intermediate levels to promote mental health “awareness”, specifically Youth in Crisis and the function of and accessibility to MetrCCS Hotline (in their county of residence). Lessons integrate vocabulary building, language skills, life skills and literacy skills with activities, discussion and authentic resources to identify symptoms of a mental health crisis as well as community resources available and how to find help. While the focus of the unit is on youth in crisis, students will develop a basic understanding of mental health issues in general, as they apply to all ages.
Unit Objective: To raise New Americans’ awareness of mental health issues typically affecting youth, yet relevant to all ages, and the role and accessibility of MetrCCS Hotline while integrating language and life skills.

UNIT 1 Objectives: Students will gain familiarity with vocabulary used to discuss healthy and unhealthy behaviors and associated emotions. Students will also discuss culturally defined behaviors and responses to such behaviors and emotions.

Materials:

UNIT 2 Objectives: Learners will be able to recognize symptoms of unhealthy behavior and demonstrate understanding of a crisis situation. They will also be able to identify resources to cope with mental health issues.

UNIT 3 Objectives: Learners will be able to identify symptoms and behaviors common during a mental health crisis. Sts will be familiar with medical terms in matching exercise.

UNIT 4 Objectives: Learners will understand the role of mental health workers and will be able to access community hotline. They will be able to gain knowledge of additional resources available online.
